According to information published by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) on August 24, 2022, American company AM General LLC, South Bend, Indiana, was awarded a $732,741,016 modification contract for the production of High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle Expanded Capacity Vehicle (HMMWV ECV) variants for U.S. Army.
The HMMWV ECV is available in command and control, troop transport, light cargo transport, shelter carrier, towed ωєαρσиs prime mover, and ωєαρσиs platform.
In terms of technical features, the HMMWV ECV variants have several improvements including new brakes, suspension, cooling system, a more powerful EPA-compliant engine, increased payload, improved corrosion prevention, and access panels to facilitate maintenance.
Despite the introduction of the JLTV in the U.S. army to replace the fleet of HUMVEE 4×4 light tactical vehicles, U.S. armed forces continue to use the new version of the HUMVEE offering more payload and performance.
Citing information from the “Military Aerospace Electronics”, currently, the HMMWV Modification Program restores payload and performance to extend the service life and enhance the durability of those ECVs not replaced by JLTV out to 2030. The U.S. Army still has a pressing need for light battlefield vehicles, which the HMMWV ECV is designed to fill.
