This little bird may be small, but it definitely makes a big impression with its unique appearance. Its plump body is no larger than a bumblebee, yet it stands out in a crowd due to its distinctive wine red and deep purple feathers, contrasted by a sparkling white cap. Interestingly, male and female snowy hummingbirds look very similar, with females sporting short, straight bills and snow-white underparts, while their upper parts are bronze-green. Hummingbirds that have white feathers and inhabit snowy regions can only be found in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and parts of western Panama. These feathered creatures typically reside in the uppermost part of the trees, near damp forest perimeters and areas of contiguous forest.
The primary source of food for this bird species is the nectar found in small flowers of vines, trees, and epiphytes. To feed on the nectar, they hover and lick it with their tongues 13 ᴛι̇ɱes in a single second. Although, these birds also add insects and spiders to their diet.
During the breeding season, both male and female hummingbirds have the ability to mate with as ɱaпy as seven different partners of the opposite sex.
Once they have found a partner, female birds construct their nests using plant fibers and spider webs on a tiny twig or vine. The nests are shaped like a cup, and the females lay two eggs inside them. They nurture the eggs for roughly two weeks, carefully incubating them, before feeding the newborn chicks until they reach maturity.
