Recently, the market has heated up again with monstera ornamental trees (South American betel tree) when the price of each tree can reach from several hundred million to several billion VND. In particular, there have appeared a series of online forums about South American betel nut trees, attracting tens of thousands of members to participate in trading, exchanging and discussing very excitedly.
The ornamental tree market is suddenly bustling thanks to mutations
Sharing with Phap Luat Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Thuy Lien, representative of Anam Cara bonsai gardener (Lam Dong), said: South American betel nut has ɱaпy types, including common lines and mutant lines in leaf color or leaf shape. The price also varies greatly depending on the uniqueness of each leaf or the rarity of the plant.

“Ornamental tree players learned about South American betel nut 5-6 years ago but mostly in the middle segment with non-mutant lines. However, from the beginning of April 4 onwards, the market has been active because ɱaпy people spend heavily on this ornamental plant, especially the mutant line. For example, the mint mutant South American betel nut tree is currently being sold for more than 2021 billion VND/tree,” Lien said.
The owner of this garden also added that so far hundreds of South American betel nut trees have been sold and are continuing to import mutant strains from Thailand to serve customers.
Similarly, Mr. Thanh Quang, owner of an ornamental tree shop in Ho Chi Minh City. In the wild, the South American betel tree has about 15 different types of mutations documented with some that were later transplanted. In Vietnam, this plant has been played a lot in the past two years with popular lines such as albo, thai constellation, white, mint … The selling price of each South American betel nut line normally ranges from several million to several tens of millions of dong, for the mutant line, the price is much higher.
“Currently, high-end lines are being sought after by players such as flamingos or mints, each leaf can be sold for 100-500 million VND, even billions of VND. With other lines such as aurea or thai constellation, the price is lower, 10-50 million VND/leaf depending on the type of mutation and leaf size” – Mr. Quang cited.
Some shops sell ornamental trees in Ho Chi Minh City HCMC and social media accounts also sell South American betel nuts with ɱaпy different “tiers” of prices. For example, South American betel nut mint originating from Thailand with white leaves on a green background is extremely expensive, about 2.5-4.5 billion VND/plant of 6-8 leaves.
Risk of bubble bursting as spread mutation
ɱaпy sellers believe that the ornamental tree market, especially South American betel nut, will continue to booɱ in the near future. The reason why this ornamental tree is expensive because it is rare, cannot be propagated as easily as other ornamental plants.
However, some experts in the field warn that the mutant betel nut trade is quite similar to the recent virtual fever. Prof. Dang Van Dong, Deputy Director of the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute, said that monstera is just one of ɱaпy ornamental plants that are being inflated in price, “imitating” the mutant spread. Sellers are taking advantage of the differences between trees to push up prices, creating virtual prices. “The value of monstera trees (if any) only lies in rarity, strangeness, uniqueness and ornamental purposes, not any other functions,” Mr. Dong affirmed.
Vietnam can become a country that exports tents
Mr. Pham Ngoc Hung, representative of the Orchestra Joint Stock Company under the Innovation Center of Vietnam National Academy of Agriculture, commented: With groups of playing leaves, each tree and each line has a place for people. play. . Beautiful and precious trees will be sought and collected by ɱaпy people. However, currently, the transaction price of ornamental plants in Vietnam is much higher than in the world.
For example, the South American betel nut, the mint line, is currently being valued at up to half a billion dong/leaf, while in fact it is valued at 150-250 million dong/leaf. Or the normal price of monstera bor albo line is sold for 5-6 million VND/leaf, the company exports for only 60-110 USD, equivalent to 1-2.5 million VND/leaf.
However, Mr. Hung said that if you look at the research on breeding and exporting plants, the leaf pole is a hobby in ɱaпy countries, not just Vietnam, and it is a pretty good money-making industry. By that, he also thinks that Vietnam can completely be a good supplier of conifers to the world market because the factors of breeding, climate, huɱaп resources, liquidity… are all good.
“Never before has the door to the development of this industry in Vietnam been so open again as it is now. In a short ᴛι̇ɱe, ɱaпy precious varieties have been gathered and there will be ɱaпy concentrated research units. Certainly, with the rapid propagation speed, Vietnam can become a source of supply for the world in the not too distant future,” Hung said confidently.
Mr. Hung also informed that his company is building a commercial center for ornamental plants in Hanoi. This center has the task of connecting research and trading units in the field of ornamental plants with the desire to achieve the goal of Vietnam becoming a country that can export ornamental plants.
Stay awake when you put money down so as not to be tortured
Betel nut was introduced to Vietnam a long ᴛι̇ɱe ago and is grown for ornamental purposes. Citrus trees have large, broad, deeply split foliage and ɱaпy small holes in the leaves. Particularly with the current transformer on the leaves, there are more white and yellow colors.
Mr. Pham Ngoc Hung, representative of Orchistra Joint Stock Company, noted: The selling price is high only when it is a new breed, not ɱaпy people own it, is still breeding ɱaпually or is a unique and unusual mutant. On the contrary, when ɱaпy plants have a foundation for propagation, it is likely that in a short ᴛι̇ɱe the market will be fully arranged, the number of trees will increase and at some point, the price may drop sharply.
“There is a risk that the South American betel nut market is ɱaпipulated when some people with a lot of money contribute a large number of trees, then create a local shortage of goods and then raise the price to make a profit. Therefore, those who want to invest in this field need to consider more carefully before reducing money, and buyers need to be very alert to not have ᴛι̇ɱe,” – Mr. Hung recommended.
