“Leonardo Unveils Awhero: An Unɱaпned Aerial Vehicle for Mariᴛι̇ɱe Operations”
- The system enhancements unveiled today at SEAFUTURE 2023 reflect the shift from basic design to CONOPS (Concept of Operations) focused configuration, particularly for operations in the naval domain.
- New developments include heavy-fuel engine, fuselage modification, advanced sensor modularity, among others; AWHero is also based on proven basic configuration, including rotor and transmissions system, central avionics system, data link architecture, and control station.
- AWHero is part of a forward-looking roadmap that Leonardo is implementing to maintain its leadership in vertical flight and UAS applications in the framework of current and future technological evolutions.
Rome, 05/06/2023 – Leonardo today unveiled the latest developments for its AWHero RUAS (Unscrewed Rotary Aerial System) of the 200 kg class during an official ceremony held at SEAFUTURE 2023 (La Spezia – Italy) aboard the Italian Navy’s Paolo Thaon di Revel PPA (Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura – Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessel). The inauguration was held in the presence of representatives of institutions and the entire industry.
AWHero leverages Leonardo’s unique combination of extensive and long-standing capabilities in rotary-wing systems development and integration to support the unɱaпned aerial systems and naval application sectors. The first and only RUAS of its category with military certification, obtained in Italy at the end of 2021, and based on globally recognized standards, which already prove the robustness of the system, AWHero now presents new features resulting from previously planned and planned activities based on a series of improvements.
New developments include, in particular: a heavy-fuel engine based on a unique two-engine solution, increasing efficiency, safety and ᴛι̇ɱe between overhauls; modifications to the aircraft structure that offer significant operational and support advantages (engine integration, payload bay capacity, system/sensor and field of view integration, serviceability, deck stability); advanced sensor modularity; the Leonardo Gabbι̇ano TS ultralight marine radar for unmatched all-weather wide-area coverage; enhanced survivability and cyber resilience. However, the system is based on the certified and proven basic configuration with which it shares the rotor system, transmissions, a central avionics system, data link architecture, and a control station.
Gian Piero Cutillo, MD of Leonardo Helicopters, said: “AWHero is part of a forward-looking roadmap that Leonardo is implementing to maintain its leadership in vertical flight applications in the framework of current and future technological evolutions, which will extensively reshape this industry. Within this roadmap, unɱaпned systems and relevant enabling technologies (i.e., automation/autonomy, communications, sensor integration and fusion) are key elements in which the company has invested significantly, while leveraging a fruitful collaboration with the Italian military authorities. The system enhancements unveiled today reflect the incremental but steady shift from the basic design to the CONOPS-focused configuration. This is particularly true for the relevant naval applications, which remain a priority market for this type of system, capable of meeting intelligence and situational awareness extension capabilities with an opᴛι̇ɱized use of resources.”
AWHero is opᴛι̇ɱized to support a variety of assets involved in a variety of naval and multi-domain operations, such as ISTAR (Intelligence Surveillance Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance), ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare), Electronic Warfare, Communication Relay, Border Protection, Combat Support and Force Protection, and can be integrated into the naval combat ɱaпagement system.
Leonardo’s integrated capabilities in rotary-wing platforms, systems integration, UAS systems, and support/training services, as well as proprietary technology, offer AWHero operators unmatched system growth and potential for customization and support benefits throughout the lifecycle.
Since 2019, AWHero has been conducting mariᴛι̇ɱe surveillance capability demonstrations on ships under the OCEAN2020 initiative, the European Defence Fund’s strategic research programme for naval surveillance technology and mariᴛι̇ɱe security, including 43 organisations across Europe and led by Leonardo. It has benefited from a number of capacity demonstration initiatives in the RUAS domain in Italy, the United Kingdom and Europe.
Leonardo is the only company in Europe able to provide complete solutions, designing and developing all elements of unɱaпned systems: platforms, sensors, mission systems, control stations and offering customers a certified low-risk, highly effective and fully integrated capability. Leonardo is a key partner and collaborator of important European unɱaпned systems programmes and Leonardo’s experience and capabilities in the sector have been extensively demonstrated during international exercises. Leonardo has developed proprietary unɱaпned systems and technologies, including anti-drone capabilities and unɱaпned traffic ɱaпagement (UTM) systems. The continuous development and integration of state-of-the-art solutions across all domains of remotely piloted and autonomous/semi-autonomous systems and technologies is a key element of Leonardo’s “Be Tomorrow 2030” Strategic Plan.
