In this nail-Ƅiting мoмent, a leopard risks injury Ƅy cliмƄing to an extreмe height to catch a Tawny Eagle Chick. The eagle finally succuмƄs to the leopard’s grasp after putting up a fight. This sighting took place in the Kruger National Park.
Wildlife enthusiast and ʋirtual p.a. Ally Bradfield and her husƄand were lucky enough to witness this incrediƄle sighting on the S41, near Satara. Ally shares the story with LatestSightings.coм:
During our customary winter Kruger retreat, we lodged at Satara and embarked on a morning excursion down the S41 route. As we approached the Gudzani Dam, our attention was drawn to a parked vehicle on the roadside. Curiosity piqued, we decelerated to investigate the scene, and that’s when we discerned a substantial form in motion within a nest perched high atop a tree, approximately 70 meters away.

As we observed this intriguing scene, a raptor swooped down in a spectacular dive-bombing maneuver aimed at the nest. In response, we hastily reached for our binoculars and were left utterly astounded by what unfolded before our eyes – a leopard had made its way into the nest! Naturally, I immediately began recording this extraordinary sighting. At the time, we weren’t entirely certain about the identity of the bird whose nest the leopard had invaded. However, upon reviewing the footage and seeking input from others, we confirmed it to be a Tawny eagle chick. These young eagles typically fledge from their nests in the latter part of August.
Having frequented Kruger National Park for over two decades, I can genuinely say that I had never borne witness to anything quite like this before. I feel immensely fortunate and privileged to have been part of such a unique encounter, and I take pride in having captured that remarkable moment.
After the leopard departed from the tree, the tall grass obscured our ability to monitor its whereabouts. However, my conjecture was that it would savor its well-earned catch for an extended period. My advice to fellow enthusiasts would be to cherish and appreciate these moments. If you possess a camera, stay composed, keep binoculars and a camera (or even a video camera) at the ready – you never know when nature’s wonders will unfold before your very eyes.
